Heineken`s SAFE CALL Program Teams with TIPS to Fund Alcohol Education Training Initiative on College Campuses
First-Of-Its-Kind Responsible Consumption Program Targets College Fraternities
WHITE PLAINS, NY--(COLLEGIATE PRESSWIRE)--August 28, 2000--Heineken USA and the TIPS Program are proud to announce a unique partnership designed to combat underage drinking on college campuses. Under the newly created arrangement, called the Heineken SAFE CALL.(TM) / TIPS University Grant Program, $10,000 will be donated to college fraternities for TIPS alcohol education training.
Under this new program, members of participating fraternities and other campus social organizations will be trained in the TIPS For the University Program to learn about the effects of alcohol, and be trained in intervention techniques. Future funding for the program will be generated through the purchase of TIPS training materials by accounts participating in the Heineken USA SAFE CALL.(TM) Program, the company’s responsible consumption which provides bar and restaurant staff in cities across the U.S. with pre-paid phone cards to be used to call a taxi or car service for customers who they believe shouldn’t be driving.
“We believe education is the key to responsibility,” says Dan Tearno, vice president of Corporate Affairs for Heineken USA. “We have endorsed the TIPS program concept, and we’re the first alcohol beverage supplier to mandate that all of our employees become certified. We’re also encouraging the establishments that participate in our SAFE CALL.(TM) program to train their servers in TIPS, so they’re better able to utilize our program effectively.”
The Heineken SAFE CALL.(TM) / TIPS University Grant Program will provide fraternities and other higher education social organizations the tools and resources to train their members in the TIPS program, one of the nation’s most-used alcohol server training program.
“We are hopeful that this effort will assist in reducing underage consumption and in educating young adults regarding responsible and legal use of alcohol. Heineken USA, through these and other responsibility programs, is committed to contributing to the beer industry’s unequaled record of proactive efforts on behalf of educating the public about responsible consumption,” Tearno says.
Adam Chafetz, president and CEO of the TIPS Program, agrees: “Our goal is to educate college students about the do’s and don’ts of alcohol use. Partnering with Heineken USA allows us to broadcast our message to the widest possible audience. We applaud Heineken USA’s commitment to alcohol responsibility.”
Heineken USA Inc., the nation’s largest beer importer, is a subsidiary of Heineken N.V. (Netherlands), which is the world’s second-largest brewer. Brands imported into the U.S. include: Heineken Lager, the world’s most international beer brand; Heineken Special Dark; Amstel Light, the largest-selling imported light beer brand; Murphy’s Irish Stout; Murphy’s Irish Amber, and Buckler non-alcoholic brew.
The TIPS Program is the nation’s premier alcohol server training program. TIPS is predicated on the notion that education and skills training provide the most effective defense against alcohol misuse. Since 1982, more than one million people have been certified in the responsible sale, service, and consumption of alcohol beverages. The nine TIPS programs address all facets of society, from the establishments that serve alcohol to consumers.
