DENVER, Colo.--(COLLEGIATE PRESSWIRE)--Nov 18, 2003--Students who are seeking to develop multicultural skills and leadership capabilities in a world-wide classroom are now able to apply on-line to the WorldSmart(TM) Leadership Program, which is one of the most unique and comprehensive study abroad programs of its kind, according to Karen Middleton, vice president for enrollment.
WorldSmart is a program of Up with People, which has been developing and connecting young people from around the world for nearly four decades.
About 100 students from more than 20 countries will be named for the six-month program launching next August, with applications now being accepted and available through www.worldsmart.org.
Cost for the program is $14,500 US, which includes tuition, air travel, housing, meals and ground transportation, as well as a full-time education team that travels with the group throughout the program.
According to Middleton, $400,000 in scholarship funding, based on merit and need, is offered each year to students age 18 to 29 from around the globe. In addition, a $100,000 scholarship fund has been established for prospective students who are children of Up with People alumni. Information on the scholarship programs is also available on the Web site.
''WorldSmart provides graduates with invaluable skills and experiences needed for our increasingly global and multicultural environment,'' said Jeff Hoag, chairman and chief executive officer of Up with People. ''It`s a perfect complement to a traditional university education, and provides graduates with an advantage in any career they choose.''
The leadership curriculum of WorldSmart includes theory and workshops conducted by trained staff facilitators, visiting professors and guest lecturers. The intensive curriculum also gives students the opportunity for hands-on community outreach and service, and unique internship experiences.
Students learn with other students from more than 20 countries, traveling to seven countries in Asia, North America and Europe. As a result, they develop a global perspective, intercultural understanding and a civic-minded background, according to Middleton.
''They will achieve an unsurpassed level of cultural immersion from their stays with 18 different host families, who are windows to local culture and lifestyles. Students also gain first-hand exposure to social issues around the world and have the opportunity to address community needs,'' she said.
College credit for the semester-long program is offered through WorldSmart`s university partners. Deadline for applying for the 19-week program running from August 2004 to December is May 14, 2004. Programs are also offered each spring semester beginning January 2005 and running until June. Following orientation in Denver, Colorado, students travel to 17 different cities around the globe, spending a week in each location.
According to Hiro Nishimura, chief operating officer of the organization, Up with People has been recognized throughout its history as one of the world`s best multicultural leadership programs for young adults, uniquely serving young people as well as communities of people around the globe.
Today, the WorldSmart Leadership Program operates out of three locations: the international headquarters in Denver, Colorado, USA; the European office in Lugano, Switzerland; and Asian office in Tokyo, Japan.
The WorldSmart Leadership Program is a program of Up with People. Since 1965, Up with People, a non-profit organization, has been developing and connecting young people from around the world through unique multicultural, international educational programs.
