Kaplan Experts Provide Tips For Students During Waiting Period

NEW YORK--(COLLEGIATE PRESSWIRE)--Apr 24, 2001--The American Medical College Application Service recently announced that this year’s online medical-school applications will be delayed due to technical glitches, resulting in less time for students to complete their applications this year. According to Kaplan, Inc. the nation’s leading provider of MCAT prep, there are a number of things that students should do during this waiting period.

“For many students, a month delay in the med school application process can create even more stress,” said Albert Chen, Executive Director of Kaplan’s Pre-Health Programs. “Rather than worrying about this delay, students need to take this time to start organizing all of the items on their application that can be prepared in advance such as the writing of essays, the preparation of transcripts and the gathering of recommendations.”

Some Kaplan tips for medical-school applicants:

* Log onto the Association of American Medical College’s site before May 1 and review the “Key Steps” Section http://www.aamc.org/students/amcas/keysteps.htm which includes items you can do now to prepare such as downloading the PDF Application Worksheet so you may begin preparing your responses in Word format and completing your Fee Assistance Program application if you think you may qualify.

* Double-check your technical requirements: Make sure your computer system has a minimum 28,800 bps modem and access to Internet Explorer 5.0 or Netscape Navigator 4.76 or higher. Be cognizant of possible technical difficulties and don’t wait until the last minute to submit your application.

* Leave enough time to write your essays. This year, a ˝-page Practice Vision essay has been added to the required 1-page Personal Comments description. The Practice Vision essay gives you an opportunity to describe your life and medical practice as you foresee them ten years from now. Don’t wait until the last minute to decide how you’re going to answer this important essay question.

* Don’t use last year’s application as a guide. There have been several important changes to this year’s application questions including some new questions as well as revisions to previous questions. Instead, refer to the online PDF Application Worksheet referenced above.

* Remember, not everything is online! Students are responsible for assembling and submitting their transcripts by mail as early as March 15. Transcripts need to be mailed directly to AMCAS by your college or university to be considered official.

* Submit your application on or after June 18. Don’t forget to carefully proofread your work and be sure to follow up on your application status to be sure that all pieces were received!

Albert Chen is available to provide additional tips for med-school applicants and to also offer feedback about this year’s MCAT.
