Company set to launch Dr Pepper Cabana Caf in time for the three-week Spring Break travel season, marking second consecutive year of providing good, clean and alcohol-free fun to more than 500,000 college students
PLANO, Texas--(COLLEGIATE PRESSWIRE)--Mar 8, 2002--As the nation’s college students make their final travel plans and preparations for a week of relaxation during the upcoming spring break season, Dr Pepper is busy making preparations of its own.
For the second consecutive year, Dr Pepper will work with the city officials of Panama City Beach, Fla., to enlist the support of vacationing college students to help preserve the beaches of the #1 Spring Break destination in the United States by planting several thousand sea oats plants.
Beginning March 10, and running through March 30, students representing colleges and universities from around the country will be transported from the Dr Pepper Cabana Caf, a 30,000 square foot, alcohol-free oasis built on the sand in front of the Summit Resort, to predetermined areas throughout the 27-miles of Panama City beach.
Supervised by Dr Pepper, The College Kit, a West Lebanon, N.H.-based promotions company helping Dr Pepper create and promote the Dr Pepper Cabana Caf, and Panama City Beach officials, the students will donate their time to a worthy cause by planting sea oats along the eroding dunes of the beach. In turn, they will learn about the environmental importance of how sea oats, a grass-like plant, can help sand dunes become less prone to erosion during high tides and strong winds, preserving the beach for future generations to enjoy.
“The Dr Pepper Cabana Caf is a high-tech, low-pressure, beach hangout for college students to experience the relaxing time of spring break, as well as enjoy friends and the great taste of ice-cold Dr Pepper,” said Cindi Clark, Dr Pepper’s senior vice president-marketing.
“At the same time, however, we want to encourage the students visiting the fully functional oasis to take time out of their vacation schedules and give something back to the community. Planting sea oats along the pristine shores of Panama City Beach is sure to give them a sense of pride, and cause them to realize the importance of taking care of our planet,” continued Clark.
The funding of this year’s preservation effort will come from the recycling of roughly 50,000 Dr Pepper cans and bottles expected to be collected during spring break. Dr Pepper will donate all of the proceeds toward the purchase of the sea oats. Last year, Dr Pepper’s contribution enabled the Panama City Beach officials to purchase and plant more than 3,000 sea oats during the three weeks of spring break.
“Last year’s beach preservation efforts were a complete success. We are extremely excited that Dr Pepper has once again agreed to assist our city in eliminating the erosion of our beautiful beaches,” said Lee Sullivan, Mayor of Panama City Beach, Fla. “This year’s planting ceremonies will be open to the press and public, and will occur at approximately 2:30 p.m., each Thursday from March 14 through March 28,” he concluded.
Open from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day, the Dr Pepper Cabana Caf offers a 3,000 square foot deck, a 500-foot long boardwalk, non-alcoholic refreshment bar, Internet stations, cable TV, free long distance calls, hot tub pavilion, live entertainment, free food, and ice-cold Dr Pepper.
