Free Consumer Downloads Available
BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE via COLLEGIATE PRESSWIRE)--Nov. 15, 2000-- Boston-based Lucira Technologies, Inc., a computer and data security company, today announced the availability of Lucira Pinpoint, a software product designed to recover stolen or missing laptops and PCs.
A preview release of Lucira Pinpoint is now available for free download to college students and other consumers at www.lucira.com. National rollout will take place Nov. 20.
Lucira Pinpoint solves the staggering problem of laptop, PC and related data loss, according to Lucira founder and Chief Executive Officer Ravi Hariprasad. ``Our new product can locate a stolen or missing laptop within thirty seconds of connection to the Internet,`` claims Hariprasad.
Lucira Pinpoint is a lightweight, stealthy software application that downloads in seconds and installs easily with very little configuration. In addition, the new product runs transparently and does not affect the way the user operates the computer. Enterprise versions of Lucira Pinpoint with additional features for commercial clients will be available in the very near future, according to
Hariprasad.
Laptop thefts occur about once every minute in the United States. According to Safeware, the nation`s largest computer insurer, the cost of stolen hardware surpassed $1 billion in 1999. The costs of corresponding data loss are exponentially higher, and future upgrades to Lucira Pinpoint will answer these related problems, Hariprasad notes.
``Future Lucira Pinpoint upgrades will allow registered users to encrypt, delete and retrieve data from the hard drive of the missing laptop or computer without the thief`s knowledge,`` adds Hariprasad.
According to Lucira Chief Privacy Officer Keith Enright, no location information is collected until a PC has been properly reported stolen by its owner. ``With the authenticated owner`s permission, we will provide location information to facilitate recovery of the stolen hardware,`` Enright explains.
