Managed Services Company, Campuses Promote Environmental Awareness
PHILADELPHIA--(BUSINESS WIRE via COLLEGIATE PRESSWIRE)--Apr 22, 2002--Earth Day -- a day to celebrate and promote the values of a healthy environment -- is an opportunity to educate others on the nation`s public commitment to protecting the earth.
Colleges and universities join communities across the country in recognizing this day with programs and activities aimed at promoting environmental awareness.
Throughout the year, ARAMARK partners with colleges, universities and student groups in support of these efforts.
The ARAMARK team at Brandeis University -- with students from the university`s environmental studies program -- designed the ''Lighten the Burden'' recycling program. The program was designed to educate campus diners on the importance of waste reduction.
Posters describing the recycling initiative and highlighting statistics on the large amount of waste generated on the Brandeis campus were placed outside of each dining location. The students constructed an archway from cardboard ''to-go'' containers that they collected during one dinner to create a visual image of how much waste is created at meals.
The program has received a great deal of support from the campus community and has cut paper costs by $800 a week.
ARAMARK at Clemson University has made efforts in recycling and energy and water conservation on their campus. Last year they recycled approximately 191 tons of cardboard and 4,187 gallons of cooking oil, installed energy efficient convection ovens in their dining halls to reduce energy consumption, and replaced outdated dishwashers to reduce water consumption.
ARAMARK teams at The University of North Carolina at Wilmington and Duke University have expansive recycling programs including, glass, plastic, fryer grease, and office papers. They also offer ''Earth Sense'' refill mugs and use napkins, bowls and paper towels all made of recycled paper.
ARAMARK at Duke University has also begun initiatives in both composting and food recycling, and won the ''Environmental Innovations Award'' from the Duke University Recycling Advisory Board.
To mark this year`s observance of Earth Day at the University of Delaware, ARAMARK - through its Ben and Jerry`s (c) location on campus -- has partnered with the Students for the Environment and the Campus Greens. Each year Ben and Jerry`s Free Cone Day (c) is used to educate customers about the environment and global warming.
Members of the student groups will volunteer to scoop ice cream, while others man booths distributing educational information and chances to win Earth Day T-shirts and other environment merchandise provided by ARAMARK, including selling chocolate Earths, gummy frogs, sharks and worms.
ARAMARK at The Juilliard School is holding a similar Earth Day celebration by partnering with the Campus Greens. Students will set up information tables promoting Earth Day and environmental awareness, while raffling off Earth Day T-shirts and mugs provided by ARAMARK.
