ST. PAUL, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE via COLLEGIATE PRESSWIRE)--May 2, 2002--The 3M Foundation today announced the recipients of its 2002 Vision Grant, which supports and encourages innovation in private colleges by providing seed money to launch new, academically based initiatives. The grant encourages faculty and students to collaborate and develop new ways of learning that connect to the community. The average grant is $50,000. The 3M Vision Grant is a national award.

As 3M celebrates its 100th anniversary, a Century of Innovation, we are pleased to recognize six private colleges that have adopted innovative programs which take student learning beyond the classroom.''
Since the Vision Grant program`s inception in 1987, more than $2.8 million has been awarded to 71 private colleges. This year`s recipients will launch programs in leadership development, math and science encouragement for girls, and environmental studies.
2002 3M Vision Grant recipients:
-- Birmingham-Southern College, Birmingham, Ala.
SMART: Storm Water Management and Restoration of Terrain Project, an innovative environmental model, will support students in their quest to learn more about water quality issues by working on an on-campus storm water demonstration site. The newly designed course will examine ecological concepts, as well as political, economic and social factors affecting environmental problems. The findings will be shared with the Village Creek Society and other community groups.
-- College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Mass.
Worcester Area Project will develop six researched-based courses with laboratories to conduct research for local nonprofit organizations. Students will work with real-world data and provide research that helps community-based agencies address local issues.
-- College of St. Catherine, St. Paul, Minn.
Teachers as Leaders Virtual Mentor Program will provide teachers with support in content and teaching methods that will engage middle school girls in math and science. Ultimately, the project will create a pipeline of young people interested in pursuing math, science and technology careers.
-- Huston-Tillotson College, Austin, Texas
Reaching Back to Discover will help the college document the achievements and contributions of African Americans in Central Texas. Students and faculty at this historically black college will develop an interdisciplinary study course that will collect historical documentation on significant events affecting African-Americans.
-- Lewis University, Romeoville, Ill.
Leadership Development for Latino/Latina Students will create a cascade of learning between the university, the Latino community, graduate, undergraduate and students at San Miguel School in Chicago. An undergraduate leadership curriculum will be developed for Lewis students who, in turn, will share this knowledge to develop leadership skills in middle and high school students.
-- Madonna University, Livonia, Mich.
Community-based Grief and Bereavement Center will serve the local community by increasing the local hospices` access to grief and bereavement counseling services for their patients and families. This grant will provide internship and service learning opportunities for students majoring in hospice education, and increased access to services for terminally ill patients and their families.
