Internet Radio Station Hosts Live Showcase Featuring Darby Jones and Fire Bug
NEW YORK--(COLLEGIATE PRESSWIRE)--Sep 24, 2002--Harris Radio, www.harrisradio.com, founded by British ex-pat Peter C. Harris will be sponsoring a live music showcase at Arlene Grocery in New York on October 9 from 7 to 9pm. Harris, a publishing and technology entrepreneur, launched the Internet venture to challenge the current monopoly that bars new music from penetrating commercial radio. Harris’ goals also include raising awareness about recent rulings to restrict Internet Radio and the pending Internet Radio Fairness Act that has been introduced to the House of Representatives.
Many Internet radio stations are in danger of bankruptcy, and could be forced off the air by October 20th, because of a Congress-imposed royalty that will be required to be paid to record labels. With the fall of Napster, a former campus favorite, the future of accessing music on-line is dim; Harris hopes to rally the support of college students nationally to voice their dissent directly to Congress to preserve Internet radio. Details of how students can locate their representatives can be found at www.saveinternetradio.com.
Harris Radio features a play list that includes local acts from the best of New York’s live music venues as well as a number of members from the www.womanrock.com Music Shop with the founder describing the selection of mixed genres as “Intelligent Music for Intelligent Minds’. West Coast rock band, Fire Bug kicks off the showcase on October 9 at 7pm. Lead singer Juliette Tworsey’s voice echoes that of The Pretender’s Chrissie Hynde while rhythms mix 60’s punk with the best of 90’s alternative rock. New Jersey’s Darby Jones follows at 8pm and will be releasing their much anticipated sophomore album. Their first release, Racket on the Seventh Floor was completed in collaboration with John Seymour, whose previous projects included work with the Dave Matthews Band, Weezer, and Santana, as producer/engineer.
Musicians may drop off CD’s at 7pm to be considered for future airplay on Harris Radio. Show starts at 7pm, cover $6. Arlene’s Grocery is located at 95 Stanton Street (212-358-1633 F train to 2nd Ave, between Ludlow and Orchard, one block South of Houston). For more information about the event or to arrange an interview with the bands or Pete Harris call 917/251-5557.
