First Golf Open to Showcase Revolutionary New Practice Ball
PRINCETON, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE via COLLEGIATE PRESSWIRE)--Apr 10, 2003--As host of the first annual AlmostGolf Open, Princeton University will launch the 2003 Unprofessional AlmostGolfers Tour -- a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the ground-breaking new ''AlmostGolf'' practice ball -- 10:30am to 5pm, Saturday, April 26th.
According to Rob Peterson, founder of AlmostGolf, the Princeton Open is a completely original 18 hole tournament utilizing this revolutionary new practice ball -- unveiled in January at the Orlando PGA Merchandise Show.
''The event marks the onset of the UATour, which we`ve dubbed the `X Games` of golf,'' Peterson explains. ''It will be played throughout the country on college campuses, and we are busy looking at campuses for our 5-7 stop fall swing and National Championships.''
Constructed of durable one piece foamed polymer, the AlmostGolf ball weighs a mere 12.95 grams -- 1/4 the weight of a traditional ball. Unlike its counterparts, the wiffle or the nerf ball, the ball is very durable and flies, fades and draws just like a regulation golf ball -- albeit at half distance. ''Since the ball flies up to 110 yards, we were able to make some really great holes,'' says Peterson. The AlmostGolf ball is window and car friendly, and most importantly, safe. ''Once it reaches its apex, you`d hardly feel it if it hit you. Basically it`s `the softball of golf,`'' Peterson explains.
With an unconventional set of rules like Hoodies, Woodies and full on Loogies, AlmostGolf deviates significantly from the traditional game. ''Through this tour, people are going to see a new way of playing the game of golf,'' Peterson says. ''AlmostGolf is the freedom to play golf anytime and anywhere.''
In that spirit, the Princeton Open will include shots off balconies, over buildings, down staircases and out of water hazards (ball floats). ''Golf will never be the same again,'' Peterson laughs.
The Princeton AlmostGolf Open is sponsored by the Tiger Inn eating club, and is open to Princeton students, select Princeton residents and AlmostGolf ringers. The first tee-off is at the Tiger Inn, on Prospect Street, in Princeton.
