Special Career Supplement, College-Focused Job Fair Aim to Keep Young Talent in Boston

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE via COLLEGIATE PRESSWIRE)--Mar 29, 2004--BostonWorks and the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce are joining together to help graduating students find career opportunities with Boston`s leading employers.

Boston Career Connections is a unique job fair and special advertising supplement designed to connect local businesses with recent graduates from Boston-area colleges and universities. On Thursday, April 1, the special supplement will be included in The Boston Globe and distributed directly on college campuses. The supplement will include a preview of all exhibitors and job opportunities that will be available at the job fair, scheduled for Monday, April 5 at The Roxy in Boston.

A 2003 study conducted by the Boston Consulting Group on behalf of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce and the Boston Foundation determined half of Greater Boston`s college graduates leave the area after receiving their degrees. The study also reported that eighty percent of these departures are avoidable and that job availability remains a critical factor in helping to retain graduates. The study also concluded that as the economy rebounds, this ''brain-drain'' will have serious implications for Greater Boston`s knowledge-based economy.

''The ability to capitalize on an educated workforce already living in Boston can be a key differentiator for the city,'' said Peter Newton, president of BostonWorks. ''As the economy improves and the need for knowledge-based workers increases, it is critical to retain these graduates and ensure Boston can offer a competitive workforce to area employers.''

''The health of Greater Boston`s economy depends on a dynamic labor force,'' said Paul Guzzi, President and CEO of the Greater Boston Chamber. ''Greater Boston employers, who have the most to gain, recognize the importance of talent retention. Boston Career Connections is a perfect opportunity for the business community to meet face to face with these talented young graduates, and showcase the fantastic career opportunities that exist right here in Greater Boston.''

In addition to entry-level job opportunities, the fair will feature information on local housing, popular destinations, tips on dressing for the workplace and ways to make a successful transition into the job market. All attendees at the fair will be eligible to win door prizes, including three months of free rent from The Hamilton Company, an annual membership to ZipCar, gym memberships, gift certificates and much more.

Pre-registration is required to attend the job fair. Recent college graduates from the class of 2003 or 2004 can pre-register at www.bostonworks.com/college. Attendees should bring a copy of the Boston Career Connections supplement from April 1 and a copy of their resume.
