Xythos` Higher Education Sales Pass 150,000 Licensees in May

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE via COLLEGIATE PRESSWIRE)--May 12, 2003--Xythos Software, the leading developer of Internet file management software, today announced that Tulane University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have selected Xythos to safely share information on and off campus. Both institutions were seeking a cost-effective solution to address growing content security requirements in addition to improving collaboration options for all members of their campus communities.

At Tulane University, students have typically saved their assignments, research and notes on floppy disks in order to continue their work from dorm rooms or while away from campus. ''The problem with this is there is no uniform way to protect or back up the files on these disks. If one is lost or stolen, then all that work is simply gone,'' explained Adam Krob, director of User Services at Tulane University. ''We will solve this problem by using Xythos to provide students with a secure location to store their files, one that is accessible in numerous ways and is backed up.'' Students will be able to create their own Xythos folders or work spaces for class work, personal information or even their own public web pages and have complete control over who can access and use their information. Tulane plans to introduce the WebFile Server to all students, both undergraduate and graduate, beginning in the fall semester of this year.

Illinois and Tulane join the growing roster of more than 150,000 students, faculty and administrators at universities nationwide licensed to use Xythos products for student/teacher collaboration, improved regulatory compliance, and even simple curriculum management. ''Xythos is becoming a popular choice for education institutions because it`s uniquely addressing their needs,'' said Ed Miller, CEO of Xythos Software, Inc. ''They don`t need the complexity and cost of enterprise content management and collaboration products, yet they must respond to the growing demand for improved information sharing and security across their campuses.''

At the University of Illinois` Urbana-Champaign campus, the legacy Unix-based system for file storage and web publishing had become difficult to navigate and expensive to maintain. Remote access to the system was limited to FTP style requests, performed within a Unix shell which was not familiar to many users and provided little content security during file transport. At the same time, the University wanted to strategically operate IT services, including file storage and web publishing, in a 100% web-centric architecture to improve overall availability and service. Important benefits of this new architecture include improved system security and a lower overall cost of maintenance. After a 4-month pilot test, the Xythos WebFile Server was chosen to provide a more user-friendly and cost-efficient file access and collaboration solution. By supporting Internet standards such as HTTP, SSL and WebDAV (Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning), Xythos will also be helping to achieve the University`s goal of delivering ubiquitous IT services that can be accessed from any Internet location.

At both universities, students and faculty will be able to more easily collaborate upon group projects by leveraging Xythos` simple content management capabilities including file versioning, check in/out, and logging. Integrated WebDAV support will also allow users to share access to files using secure links (URLs) in email improving file security while providing the universities an opportunity to substantially reduce the burden of email attachments upon their messaging systems.
