NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE via COLLEGIATE PRESSWIRE)--Aug 28, 2003--New York Law School has established a Diploma in the Law of the Workplace, a one-year program of intensive, evening law study designed especially for human resources professionals, students in graduate human resources management, and other non-lawyers.
''The law is an important force directing the course of change in the workplace. Today`s business, governmental, and not-for-profit organizations must comply with a dizzying array of workplace laws--Americans with Disabilities Act, Family and Medical Leave Act, Fair Labor Standards Act, Employee Retirement Income Security Act, Age Discrimination in Employee Act, Occupational Safety and Health Act, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Immigration Reform and Control Act--to name a few,'' commented Professor Seth Harris, who heads the initiative and directs New York Law School`s Labor and Employment Law Program. ''These laws affect virtually every aspect of workplace life. Ultimately it is human resources professionals, not lawyers, who bear the front-line responsibility for assuring that their employers comply with these laws.''
Professor Harris spent nearly seven years at the United States Department of Labor as a senior advisor to two Secretaries of Labor on policy, legal, management, and strategy issues before joining the faculty at New York Law School in 2000.
Chaired by former United States Secretary of Labor Alexis M. Herman, an advisory board of prominent leaders of the human resources, labor and employment law, and trade union communities is assisting the labor and employment law faculty in constructing and refining the Diploma in the Law of the Workplace program to serve the needs of today`s human resources professionals.
The Diploma in the Law of the Workplace offers a comprehensive curriculum including core courses addressing the important statutes, regulations and judicial opinions governing the modern workplace. These core courses cover Employment Law, Employment Discrimination Law, and Labor Relations Law. Students are trained in legal reasoning and research, and participate in a unique course titled Problem Solving and the Law of the Workplace that brings human resources professionals and law students together to learn how to work cooperatively.
