BDSSP Undertakes Nationwide Search for Future Film Makers; Winners to Intern at Fox This Summer

First, amidst the sunshine of the French Riviera, came Cannes. Then, with the scenic mountains of Utah as a backdrop, there is Sundance. But now, the best damn film festival, for sports anyway, may be percolating at the intersection of Pico & Motor in nitty-gritty LA.
This month, Fox Sports Net introduces the first annual BEST DAMN SPORTS SHOW PERIOD Student Film Festival Presented by Sony Electronics, a unique, and exciting hands-on educational opportunity for students to develop and prove their filmmaking and/or television-production skills. Grand prize winners will be selected in both Fiction and Non-Fiction categories. The winner in the Fiction category will win a summer internship with 20th Century Fox Films, while the Non Fiction winner earns an internship this summer at BDSSP. Both expense-paid internships are located on the Fox Lot in Los Angeles, and both grand prize winners also receive the latest Digital Handycam� Camcorder from Sony Electronics.
BEST DAMN SPORTS SHOW PERIOD (BDSSP) is Fox Sports Net`s nightly irreverent rollercoaster ride that blurs the line between the worlds of sports and entertainment. The Emmy-nominated show features actor/comedian Tom Arnold serving as the voice of the fan, host and traffic cop Chris Rose, and former NBA All-Star John Salley.
``It`s rare that students get the chance to have their work seen by executives and creative people at the highest levels of Hollywood, and rarer still are such competitions offered for sports-themed projects,`` said David Hill, Chairman, Fox Sports Television Networks. ``I see the BDSSP Student Film Festival as that rare opportunity, and as digital cameras become more ubiquitous, primary creativity will transition from written expression to visual expression.``
The blue ribbon panel that will ultimately choose the two winning works is
already taking impressive shape, and includes some of the entertainment industry`s most accomplished executives and creative talents. Chairman and CEO of Sony Corporation of America Sir Howard Stringer, Fox Filmed Entertainment Chairmen Tom Rothman and Jim Gianopulos, Chris Carter, the legendary creator of The X Files and Variety Editor-in-Chief Peter Bart are scheduled to be judges. Others of equally high Hollywood stature may also be added to the group over the next few weeks.
Students competing for the Fiction award are invited to produce a short film of any kind-dramatic, comedic, satiric or a hybrid-relating some way to the world of sports. Non-Fiction submissions must be a sports-related news story, feature-piece or interview. The only stipulations are: 1) that no entry should exceed three minutes; 2) all entries must be submitted in Beta format; 3) every submission must have been produced by matriculating undergraduate students, either as an individual or group; and 4) to be eligible, students must be enrolled in Film, Journalism or Communication programs or classes at accredited institutions and registered to return to school in the fall of 2004 at the time of entry. The deadline for receiving submission is March 1, 2004.
After all submissions are first screened and vetted by the BDSSP production staff, ten finalists will be selected, five Fiction and five Non-Fiction. Those ten entries will then be reviewed by Hill`s blue-ribbon panel. One of the Final 10 submissions will be televised daily over a two-week period on BEST DAMN SPORTS SHOW PERIOD in late March. The Final 10 submissions may also be screened via the Internet at www.foxsports.com. The two winning entries will be announced during a BDSSP show in late March, with the winners then flown to Los Angeles to appear and have their submission aired again on BDSSP in early April.
