Tricryption(R) Data Security System Helps Higher Education Institutions Meet Data Privacy and Confidentiality Requirements

DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE via COLLEGIATE PRESSWIRE)--Oct 19, 2004--NEC Solutions (America), Inc., (Nasdaq:NIPNY) a premier provider of integrated solutions for the Connected Enterprise in North America, announced today at the 2004 EDUCAUSE Annual Conference the NEC Tricryption(R) Data Security System, a unique three-layered data encryption solution designed to meet higher education data privacy regulations while supporting escalating demands for user access to information. Using advanced encryption, NEC`s Tricryption System helps colleges and universities meet a variety of data privacy and confidentiality requirements such as PERPA, HIPAA, the Privacy Act of 1974, GLBA and the USA-Patriot Act.

''In the recently released EDUCAUSE 2004 Core Data Survey results, Security and Identity Management ranks among the top three IT issues faced by higher education professionals. Colleges and universities have to ensure that strategies, tools and staffing are in place to effectively manage and protect the campus as new technologies become available,'' said Dennis Kilian, vice president, Enterprise Services Division of NEC Solutions America. ''NEC`s Tricryption Data Security System offers a cost-effective way to help higher education institutions implement the technical safeguards required in the current environment of comprehensive network access, distributed architectures, hostile elements on the Internet and regulatory statutes.''

NEC`s Tricryption Data Security System is an ideal encryption solution available to help higher education institutions comply with regulatory requirements, protect the privacy of confidential data, and build a secure and optimally connected campus.

Three Levels of Encryption -- As the name implies, Tricryption performs encryption at three levels: the data itself, the encryption keys, and the link between the encrypted data and encrypted keys. This three-level approach helps to eliminate misuse of confidential information, virus threats and the transfer of protected data to unauthorized users.

Selective Data Encryption -- While most solutions encrypt entire databases, Tricryption vastly improves performance by allowing users to selectively encrypt only confidential data fields or columns, eliminating the need to decrypt an entire database.

Protect Data at Rest -- Traditional encryption solutions do not protect data when it is most vulnerable -- while at rest in a database or folder. Tricryption Data Security System offers complete data security wherever the files is located -- at rest or in transit -- whether connecting to the network or off-line.

Secure Information Sharing -- In addition to file and database protection, Tricryption allows users to securely share information via email, whereby individual recipients can be assigned specific privileges to access certain documents. In a higher education setting, for example, a professor can electronically transmit students` grades to the Records Office and ensure that unauthorized users cannot view this confidential information in either location. An audit trail is also created that allows authorized users to see who has accessed what data and when.

Automated Key Management -- Unlike traditional ''key management'' where an administrator must be assigned to manage storage, access and transfer of security keys, the Tricryption System provides automated key management and centralized access authorization to ensure only authorized users can decrypt and access files. This ensures data privacy without additional IT overhead and resources.

Easy to Implement and Cost Efficient -- NEC`s Tricryption System integrates seamlessly with leading databases, operating platforms and enterprise applications. The File Protection client is designed to operate in all Microsoft(R) Windows(R) environments; and the Database Protection element works with leading databases, such as Microsoft SQL, Oracle(R), IBM(R) and DB2(TM), as well as major operating platforms, including Windows, Linux(TM), Solaris(TM), HP-UX and AIX. In addition, the Tricryption System supports major directory services and biometric input to authenticate users trying to access information, providing quick, secure access where needed.

''NEC is driving the next generation for higher education security solutions. The Tricryption Data Security System adds a new level of security to student information, and it is easy to implement and use on a day-to-day basis,'' concluded Dennis Kilian. ''The solution also provides comprehensive audit logs to track activities -- another important aspect of PERPA, HIPAA, GLBA and USA-Patriot compliance. Tricryption is a straightforward and cost-effective way to help meet regulatory requirements for data confidentiality and student privacy''
