Free Web Service From Pearson Helps Them Succeed

UPPER SADDLE RIVER, N.J.--(COLLEGIATE PRESSWIRE)--Sep 17, 2004--Pearson Education, the worlds leading educational publisher, has launched a free, interactive website that offers college students a variety of tips and techniques to help them adapt to college-level learning. The site, Make Your Textbook Work For You, is accessible through websites of the companys leading textbook imprints, Pearson Prentice Hall, Pearson Addison Wesley, Pearson Allyn & Bacon, Pearson Benjamin Cummings and Pearson Longman.

The websites where the tips can be accessed are: www.prenhall.com, www.ablongman.com and www.aw-bc.com.

College is an important investment for students and we want to do whatever we can to help make the experience as positive and successful as possible, said Sandi Kirshner, President of Addison Wesley Higher Education Group. By offering this dynamic website, students attending college have an additional resource to learn skills that will help them adapt to the rigors of college learning.

It has been estimated that 85% of learning in college involves text, said Jodi Patrick Holschuh, Assistant Professor at the University of Georgia, coauthor of College Success Strategies and Active Learning: Strategies for College Success, and author of the Make Your Textbook Work for You website content. Yet many students do not understand the importance of using their text to learn. Instead, students may attempt to rely solely on the professor as the source of knowledge even in courses where the professor explicitly states otherwise. Therefore, it is imperative that students learn strategies to get the most out of their reading. This includes learning to concentrate while reading, knowing how and why one should compare lecture notes to the text, and recognizing how to utilize the text visual aids. By learning these skills, students will become better readers and learners.

Topics on the website include creating an appropriate learning space, developing a reading schedule, learning how to best navigate a textbook and understand how to read using the books chapter summaries, text boxes, figures, charts, diagrams and other visuals, as well review and practice questions. Information on the website is provided with sound and video and is also available in a PDF print and save format.

The website offers an interactive feature called Ask Alice, where students can pose questions to expert educators on a variety of topics including how to get the most out of textbooks, improving study habits, enhancing learning styles and seeking other websites and sources for improving study habits. The Study Skills Kiosk provides additional resources available for purchase, including several dozen Pearson-published books on improving and enhancing learning skills as well as colorful and affordable study guides for specific textbooks that distill course information.

Make Your Textbook Work for You is part of the Pearson First Day of Class program, an initiative started three years ago to help students succeed in their college course work. This fall, Pearson representatives across the country are visiting college classrooms to show students how to get the most out of their textbooks and technology resources. The program will reach over one millions students this fall.

One of my undergraduate students came to me in tears to say she was having difficulty understanding the textbook. I sent her the link to the textbook tips website and thought it would really help her. I also posted a link to the site on our course website for all my students, knowing full well that others may be having the same difficulty but are uncertain about coming to me, said Dr. Wendy P. Cook, associate professor and doctoral program director, Florida State Universitys School of Social Work, Tallahassee.

The First Day of Class is part of Pearson Educations ongoing commitment to provide value and choice to college students. Other initiatives include PearsonChoices (www.pearsonchoices.com), which offers the highest quality learning programs in a wide choice of media, formats and price points, and represents Pearsons commitment to providing significant flexibility and value for hundreds of its leading titles. Each title in the PearsonChoices program is available in a range of print and digital formats. Faculty and students can choose from low-cost alternate print editions, custom editions built around their courses, text/web combinations, SafariX WebBooks, and the traditional textbook. SafariX, available this fall, is a comprehensive, low-priced digital textbook program offering more than 100 titles at 50 percent off the suggested list price of the print equivalent edition. The WebBooks offer all the convenience and interactive benefits of the Web, allowing students to print pages, make annotations, take notes, search the full text, and add bookmarks to organize their study, anywhere they have browser access.
