Goldman, Sachs & Co. sponsors the 4th annual competition, on May 13th in New York City
WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE via COLLEGIATE PRESSWIRE)--May 2, 2005--The Executive Leadership Council (ELC) will host its fourth annual 2005 Business Case Competition titled The Coca-Cola Company in South Africa: Focusing on Black Economic Empowerment. MBA students from leading business schools have been asked to examine The Coca-Cola Company in South Africa and the advancement of black economic empowerment in a nation that is emerging from a legacy of apartheid. On May 13, 2005 in New York City, the top three individuals or student teams will present their cases.
Dartmouth College Professor Paul A. Argenti of Tuck School of Business, met with Coca-Cola executives and senior business and government leaders in South Africa then penned a compelling case exploring the issues facing Coca-Cola since the South African government developed Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) ''best practices'' guidelines in 2004. Coca-Cola`s current BEE equity participation rate stands at 5%. The government has set a target of 25.1% black ownership for a company to be considered ''black empowered.''
The competition invited individual African-American students or teams of up to five students, the majority of whom must be African-American, to compete from 35 selected MBA schools nationwide. Fifty applicants submitted their best cases this year with hopes to make the final round. Finalists will be selected the first week of May and the top three finalists will compete for first, second and third place rankings for $35,000 in cash prizes. Each finalist will present before a corporate audience and a distinguished panel of judges comprised of senior executives from The Coca-Cola Company in Africa, The Executive Leadership Council and Goldman Sachs.
This initiative is funded by The Executive Leadership Foundation, the 501 ( c) (3 ) affiliate of The Executive Leadership Council, through the generous sponsorship of Goldman, Sachs & Co. The May 13 finals will be held at Goldman Sachs New York headquarters.
