Money Will Buy Technology for State-of-the-Art Learning Center
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE via COLLEGIATE PRESSWIRE)--Feb 21, 2003--U.S. Rep. Mike Honda announced $900,000 for Santa Clara University as part of the $397.4 billion spending bill signed by President George W. Bush on Feb. 20.
''I am proud to announce $900,000 for Santa Clara University,'' said Honda. ''These resources will be used to construct a world class library that will be an important resource to students, businesses, and all of Silicon Valley.''
Santa Clara University is planning to construct and equip a $76 million Library for the 21st century. The new library will serve as an Information Commons that will allow the University to serve as a portal and gateway to the Silicon Valley community including K-12 schools, businesses, and government agencies.
''We want to create a world-class resource where our faculty and students can access information from around the world in unprecedented volume,'' said Jim Purcell, SCU vice president of university relations. ''Santa Clara must be part of this new wave of accessibility. This grant moves us further along that path.''
Santa Clara University is in the 15th Congressional District. ''The new library will be a strategically important resource that will serve as a model for the entire nation,'' Purcell said. ''Federal appropriations will be specifically utilized for technology acquisition to create a state-of-the-art learning center.'' Raising money for the new library is a key component of the $350 million Campaign for Santa Clara announced last fall. More than $165 million has been raised in the campaign, which includes money for scholarships, endowed professors, and a new business school.
