ST. PAUL, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE via COLLEGIATE PRESSWIRE)--May 7, 2002--3M Occupational Health and Environmental Safety Division will award its 16th annual Industrial Hygiene Scholarships to four exceptional students in the field. The scholarship recipients will be recognized during the American Industrial Hygiene Conference and Exposition (AIHCE) in San Diego, Calif., in June.

The 3M Industrial Hygiene Scholarship program recognizes and rewards the contributions of graduate and undergraduate students of industrial hygiene for high levels of scholarship, contributions to the profession of worker safety and intent to pursue industrial careers in the discipline.

Renee Anthony, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Brandon Takacs, West Virginia University; Lisa Wagoner, Purdue University; and Marcos da Silva, Colorado State University, will each receive a $5,000 scholarship from 3M Occupational Health and Environmental Safety. Marcos da Silva, from Brazil, is the recipient of a scholarship designated for non-U.S. residents. In addition to providing the scholarship, 3M will sponsor the students` travel and accommodations to the AIHCE.

The scholarship program reinforces 3M`s ongoing commitment to education and training in the field of industrial hygiene. This scholarship has been awarded to 44 students of industrial hygiene during the past 15 years. Recipients now hold a variety of professional health and safety positions in industry, research, government, academia and the U.S. military.

The 2002 Scholarship Recipients

Renee Anthony: Renee is a doctoral student in industrial hygiene at the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill. After completing her master`s degree in environmental engineering at UNC, Renee worked as an industrial hygienist in the pulp and paper industry for eight years. At International Paper, Renee provided industrial hygiene technical support to 40 of the company`s U.S.-based facilities and mentored the junior industrial hygiene staff. Outside of her employment, Renee has been active in speaking about industrial hygiene at professional and industry forums, and serving on various AIHA committees. Because she enjoys education and mentoring, Renee decided to commit the next phase of her career to teaching the ''future'' of the profession and returned to UNC to pursue a doctorate. Her current research interests center on modeling aerosol inhalability.

Brandon Takacs: Brandon is a graduate student at the newly formed Occupational Safety and Health doctoral program at West Virginia University (WVU), where he also earned his master of science degree in occupational hygiene and occupational safety. As a graduate intern with the WVU Safety and Health Extension, Brandon worked on the Small Business Safety Outreach Program, providing safety and health consulting services to small businesses in West Virginia. The internship gave him opportunities to visit a variety of industries, interact with management regarding safety and health issues, and serve as a coordinator for six other student interns working on the program. Brandon wants to obtain professional certification in industrial hygiene and ergonomics and gain work experience to help him reach his goal of becoming a professor of industrial hygiene. In addition to his work as a graduate intern, Brandon has served as president of the WVU Industrial Hygiene Student Association.

Lisa Wagoner: Lisa is enrolled in the master`s program in industrial hygiene at Purdue University. Her goal to become an occupational health professional began to crystallize while she worked on an assembly line at an automobile manufacturing plant. Her first-hand experience with concerns about ergonomic, chemical exposure and general safety issues prompted Lisa to volunteer as a safety representative for her area and learn the basics of safety in the workplace. Wanting to learn more, Lisa took undergraduate courses in environmental engineering, and then enrolled in the graduate program at Purdue University. After completing her degree, Lisa intends to stay at the current location as an industrial hygienist to ensure that others can work at their jobs for 30 years and retire as healthy individuals. Lisa received a Johnson & Johnson Award from the Society of Women Engineers at Purdue University in recognition of her outstanding scholastic achievement. She also received a NIOSH Fellowship for 2002-2003.

Marcos da Silva: Marcos is pursuing a master`s degree in industrial hygiene at Colorado State University. Marcos has worked in the field of industrial hygiene for 27 years, spending most of that time at Fundacentro, a Brazilian government agency focused on the prevention of occupational diseases and workplace accidents. While at Fundacentro, Marcos was a member of a task force appointed to propose new environmental standards for the workplace -- a very important event in the history of disease and injury prevention in Brazil. Marcos has been professionally active and played a fundamental role in establishing the Association of Brazilian Occupational Hygienists (ABHO). He also served on the AIHA International Affairs Committee and made significant contributions on the AIHA Task Force on Sweatshops. After completing his degree, Marcos plans to return to Brazil to teach future specialists in safety and occupational health to help improve the well being of his country`s workers.
