Six top college newspapers recognized, setting high standards for commercial newspapers aiming to reach young readers
BOSTON--(COLLEGIATE PRESSWIRE)--April 13, 2006--College Publisher, the largest provider of content management solutions for college newsrooms, is pleased to announce the winners of its 2006 College Publisher Awards of Excellence. Almost 70 nominations were received for five categories in online journalism and interactive advertising, including Excellence in Advertising, Best Online Sports, Best Online News, Cutting Edge, and Best Non-Daily. College Publisher's content management system and services are utilized by hundreds of college newspapers, which together comprise a network of over 450 websites. College Publisher is a unit of Y2M: Youth Media and Marketing Networks, a full-service marketing agency specializing in connecting leading brands with the college market.
The winners of the 2006 College Publisher Awards of Excellence are:
* The Daily Orange of Syracuse University - Best Online Advertising
* The Daily Pennsylvanian at the University of Pennsylvania - Best Online Sports Coverage
* The Daily Iowan of the University of Iowa - Best Online News Coverage
* BC Heights of Boston College - Best Non-Daily
* The Indiana Daily Student of Indiana University and The Daily Iowan - Best Cutting Edge use of Technology
* The Daily Texan of the University of Texas in Austin - Best New Readership Initiative
The nominations were collected by a panel of College Publisher staff members, who reviewed all of the sites in each category. After careful consideration, College Publisher named winners in each category, in addition to a sixth award dedicated to best new readership initiative. Honorable mentions for each category were also named.
Each of the websites selected by College Publisher has raised the bar for not only college media outlets, but also professional news organizations, particularly in local newspaper markets where many of these strategies can be quickly applied:
* Through their performance in 2005, the Daily Orange has found the right combination of pricing and strategy that keeps its online advertising inventory completely booked using a mix of bundled offerings, local business directories, and targeted email advertising.
* The Daily Texan drew readers to its website in dramatic ways during its online-only spot-coverage of the Rose Bowl, complete with daily photographic and text updates.
* The Daily Iowan has expanded its news coverage with online-only television segments, including feature-length broadcasts of the day's headlines and converged coverage of stories by print and television reporters.
"The Awards of Excellence are meant to recognize some of the nation's best online college newspapers, and give greater exposure to some of the trend-setters in the industry," said Paul Pennelli, director of web products at Y2M. "Much is made of the supposed abandonment of news media by young readers, but our contention is that college newspapers are among the few news organizations that are delivering content in ways that young readers want and as a result, they do indeed read the news."
The strategies used in college media and recognized by the College Publisher Awards of Excellence are proven to drive readership levels within the hard-to-reach 18-to24 demographic. According to recent research by Student Monitor, 76% of college students state that they read their college newspaper on a regular basis.
