NEW YORK--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE via COLLEGIATE PRESSWIRE)--Nov 30, 2001--Multi-platinum recording sensation Mya has landed a supporting role in the film adaptation of Broadway musical Chicago starring Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Richard Gere.
Mya will play a sexy murderess named Mona, a part specifically tailored for her, and will be part of elaborate acting, singing and dance sequences with Zellweger and Zeta-Jones and Gere. This will be Mya`s first featured film role. Mya, who made her start as an entertainer with dance training beginning at a very early age, and has made dance a dynamic part of her live concerts and videos, was well suited for the rigors of the Chicago production. Chicago begins filming in January.
We have seen glimpses of Mya`s seductive presence and acting skills throughout her career, however, one of the most notable examples was seen earlier this year when she portrayed a sexy vixen in the provocative video for ``Lady Marmalade`` for the Moulin Rouge soundtrack, which she performed with Christina Aguilera, Pink, and Lil Kim. The video, directed by Paul Hunter, received two prestigious MTV Video Music Awards for Video Of The Year and Best Video From A Film. ``Lady Marmalade,`` which was a smash hit worldwide, remained at #1 on Billboard`s Hot 100 Chart for 5 weeks and became one of the biggest singles of the year and is expected to be a Grammy favorite.
In addition to her film work, Mya has also been busy working on her new album to be released in the Spring 2002. She is taking a very hands-on approach to this record -- writing and co-producing most of the songs and collaborating with some of music industry`s most sought-after producers, including renowned hitmakers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Dr. Dre, Damon Elliott, newcomer Knobody and Tricky Stewart (who produced Mya`s smash hit single ``Case Of The Ex``). Mya`s sophomore album, Fear Of Flying, released in 2000, made a big impression with the hit single ``Case Of The Ex,`` which peaked at #1 on the Hot 100 & R&B;/Hip Hop Singles Sales Charts and #2 on Billboard`s Hot 100 Singles Chart. A platinum success, Fear Of Flying also featured the sensational single ``Free,`` produced by Jam and Lewis. The groundbreaking video for ``Free`` showcased Mya`s remarkable dancing talent, her athleticism and her taste for new and exciting choreography.
Mya has also been seen recently as part of the Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Celebration on CBS. Her appearance was yet another example of her multi-faceted talent. The show, which was one of the highest-rated programs in recent history, showcased Mya performing a thrilling rendition of ``Wanna Be Startin` Something`` with Usher and Whitney Houston and the emotive ``Heal The World`` with Tamia, Deborah Cox, Monica, and Rah Digga.
