CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE via COLLEGIATE PRESSWIRE)--Jun 23, 2004--Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq:SYMC), the global leader in information security, today announced that two graduate students at Carnegie Mellon University will receive funding for their post-graduate studies in cyber security as a result of a fellowship grant made by Symantec to the university`s Information Network Institute.

Michael Seto and Andrew Yao will receive $30,000 each to pursue their master`s degrees beginning in the Fall of 2004 in Information Security Technology and Management. The fellowship grants stem from Symantec`s support for the development and expansion of academic programs and curriculum dedicated to Internet security research at Carnegie Mellon`s CyLab. The Information Network Institute is the education arm of CyLab.

''As the only pure-play Internet security provider in CyLab`s Strategic Partner program, Symantec brings a unique perspective for how universities like Carnegie Mellon can work with businesses to combat today`s cyber threats,'' said Dena Haritos Tsamitis, associate director of the Information Networking Institute and director of education, training and outreach for CyLab. ''Obviously, the first issue to address is turning out more trained personnel to answer the shortage of experts that exists in the security industry today. We look forward to working with Symantec to answer that need and to expand the field of study for cyber security.''

''The security industry as a whole relies heavily on universities such as Carnegie Mellon as a source of manpower and research devoted to the study of Internet security,'' said Wesley Higaki, director of Symantec`s University Research Program. ''It`s imperative that we continue to support the efforts of faculty and students at programs such as CyLab to ensure a safer online environment for individuals, enterprises, and public entities.''

By pursuing master`s degrees in Information Security Technology and Management, Seto and Yao will receive exposure to a variety of security topics including networked and distributed system security, applied cryptography, operating system security and secure software engineering. Seto is a graduate of the University of Calgary with a degree in electrical engineering, while Yao earned a computer science degree from the University of Massachusetts.

Carnegie Mellon`s Information Networking Institute was established in 1989 and is the nation`s first research and education center devoted to training a new breed of information network professionals. It is a cooperative endeavor of the university`s Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, the School of Computer Science, the Tepper School of Business and the Heinz School of Public Policy and Management.

As a Strategic Partner of CyLab, Symantec will have access to the research and technology generated by its staff, faculty and students. Symantec has also established fellowships at Purdue University`s Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security to provide scholarship funding for two graduate students. In addition, Symantec is a sponsor of Stanford University`s Computer Forum. Finally, Symantec has provided funding and support to the University of Auckland, New Zealand`s largest university, for the establishment of an information security laboratory.

Symantec`s University Research Program was established to facilitate and coordinate Symantec`s involvement with universities that emphasize research and study in the Internet security field. Aside from monetary support through Fellowships, Symantec supports universities by offering corporate spokespersons for seminars and lectures to students and faculties. In addition, Symantec provides feedback on the research conducted by universities and input on areas that the industry deems important to help direct the focus of study by universities on Internet security issues.
