Collegiate Conference Provides Students Glimpse Into Real World of Public Relations

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE via COLLEGIATE PRESSWIRE)--Jan 15, 2002--Over the years, one conference has earned a reputation as a crucial stepping-stone for students as they plan a career in public relations.

Hundreds of college students from more than 40 universities across the United States will again have the opportunity to learn about the ``real world`` at the annual Real World PR 2002 collegiate conference in Atlanta on Friday, February 8.

The purpose of this conference, sponsored by the Public Relations Society of America-Georgia Chapter (PRSA-GA), is to provide students with useful, timely information to complement lessons learned in the classroom. Throughout the course of the day, students have the opportunity to attend a keynote address, interactive seminars, panel discussions, professional development sessions and a networking luncheon.

``Attending this conference for the past three years has given me great insight as to what my career will consist of and who my peers will be in the future,`` said Sarah Fitts, PRSSA president of Georgia State University in Atlanta. ``Staying atop the industry helps students make more educated decisions about their career after college.``

More than 200 public relations professionals are scheduled to participate during the conference, offering students the unique opportunity to meet and talk with representatives from Atlanta`s largest corporations, non-profit organizations and communications agencies.

This year`s luncheon will feature Kay Golan, director of media relations for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Drawing from her first hand experience in overseeing the crisis communication team at the CDC during the anthrax/bioterrorism event, Golan will reveal the media relations and crisis communications strategies and tactics implemented as well as the lessons learned. Golan has more than 20 years experience in media relations, public affairs, crisis communication and public policy. She directs the strategic planning and response to the print and electronic media for the CDC, which was mentioned more than 30,000 times last year alone in the print media.
